The ISE Department: a Strong Reputation for Excellence In Research

Excellence In Research and Teaching Go Hand-In-Hand

"We know that the best teachers and researchers want to be part of the best institutions. And when they are here, they attract the best and brightest students to campus, who learn from world-class experts in more than 100 academic fields."
Former OSU President Karen Holbrook

Research Excellence

The ISE department has established several areas of research excellence including manufacturing processes, human factors and ergonomics, welding and joining, and operations research. The department is the home of the Institute for Ergonomics and the Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing (ERC/NSM) and is affiliated with the Edison Welding Institute, a nonprofit materials joining engineering organization. The department's annual research expenditures are in excess of $6,000,000. Primary sources of funding include the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the US Department of Energy, Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, and industry. Approximately 60% of the research funding is from federal sources and 40% from industry.
